A Wonderful Photograph of that exquisite horse BARBARO.
Barbaro was loping back to collect his red roses, winding down after winning the 132nd Kentucky Derby as the second betting choice, when jockey Edgar Prado made clear what the race had been all about.....
It was all about this thoroughbred horse who had simply dominated this Derby, running off from all the other hopefuls to win by 6 1/2 lengths over Bluegrass Cat, followed closely by Steppenwolfer. [Only four previous Derby winners had won by a greater margin, all four by 8 lengths.]
Perched in the saddle, Edgar Prado raised his arms expansively to acknowledge the cheering crowd of 157,536 devoted racing fans (the second-largest attendance recorded in Derby annals). Then he pointed downwards from the saddle to his horse.
On as perfect and sun-splashed a late afternoon as anyone could ever hope to see at Churchill Downs, the jockey was telling the world that this was all about Barbaro, the $14.20 winner of the 132nd Kentucky Derby.
"In victory and defeat, and every day in between, horses remain wordless creatures. To those in the sport who spend their days caring for them, these thousand-pound thoroughbreds are like children — not in any sentimental sense, but in the sense that they cannot take care of themselves. They need people to provide them with water, food, shelter, exercise. The good ones are treated the way every child should be treated — with the mixture of care and discipline best suited for that particular individual.
When we care about someone, or some animal, our first instinct is to reject the idea of death. Most people want to leave open at least a small window of opportunity for hope.
At the medical center where Barbaro was being treated, people left signs for the colt, expressing their love for him.
Perhaps the real miracle — the one that matters to all of us, whether we know it or not — is that so many of us are still capable of caring so much."
