No horse had won the Kentucky Derby with a five-week or longer layoff since Needles did 50 years ago. But Barbaro showed how special he is by remaining undefeated and winning the 132nd running of the race by a wide margin.
Edgar Prado had Barbaro in excellent position throughout the race, in fifth the first time past the stands and in fourth when the field had run a half mile and six furlongs. As the field cornered for home, the race was over. He made the winning move through the turn and as the field straightened away for the stretch run but the race was over. Prado simply guided Barbaro to the wire.
A very unique hand painted pewter pin of The Great Barbaro.
Each pin is hand painted by reknowned artist Peter Canzone, whose popular handpainted horse pins can be found in The Kentucky Derby Museum and in the gift shop at The Kentucky Horse Park. Secretariat's jockey Ron Turcotte owns several, as do the owners of the Kentucky Derby Winner Monarchos and The Belmont Stakes Winner Point Given. Many horse owners commission him to paint a limited edition of their favorite horse. Here, the artist has captured the essence and colors of Barbaro and the racing silks of his Jockey.
A really beautiful piece of jewelry for the lovers of Barbaro and any horse lover. Looks great on a scarf, blouse or jacket lapel, or a tote bag and men love to put these pins on hats, caps, jackets and on canvas belts. Makes a fabulous gift!
