TRIPLE CROWN PLATE 1919 -1935 by Fred Stone
The American Triple Crown 1919-1935 featuring Sir Barton - Omaha - Gallant Fox .
A Magnificent Porcelain Collectors Plate by artist Fred Stone.
The back of the plate reads:
The mists of history lift to reveal the unlikely birth of the Triple Crown, delivered in 1919 by a blaze-faced colt whose first taste of victory came on a storm tossed Derby afternoon. Just four days later, the Preakness followed, a deep breath, then, at last, the Belmont. Suddenly Sir Barton had woven a tapestry of unmatched accomplishment.
In reality, the Triple Crown was a child of the Great Depression, when the heroes of sports gave solace to a nation ravaged by strife. In the dark year of 1930, when no light shone at the end of the tunnel, Gallant Fox was the star of the hour, a celebrity hailed at the top of every page. The colt was called "The Fox of Belair", quick and wily, his white nose always smelling the hunt. He earned great sums when money was scarce.
The Fox retired and instantly sired a son to carry the flame. Gallant Fox begat Omaha, 1930 turned into 1935, and the Triple Crown again belonged to owner William Woodward. Omaha bore the shadow of his father with speed and distinction through Kentucky, Maryland and New York.
